(6) Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey.
(answer) Brakes should not feel spongy or soft, they should be tested as you set off and the veichle should not pull to one side.
(7) Tell me where you would find the reccomended tyre pressures for this car and how the pressures should be checked.
(answer) In the manafacturers guide, use a reliable pressure gauge and check the when tyres are cold.
(8) Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road.
(answer) There should be 1.6mm of tread depth and no cuts or bulges to the outer walls of the tyre.
(9) Show me or explain how you would check the power steering is working before starting a journey.
(answer) Apply gentle pressure to the steering wheel while starting the engine, this should result in a slight but noticable movement in the steering wheel as the system begins to operate.
(10) Tell me how you would check the headlights and tail lights are working.
(answer) Switch on lights ( turn on ignition if necessary) walk around veichle.
(11) Show me how you would check the direction indicators are working.
(answer) Switch on indicators or hazard warning lights and walk around the veichle to check.
(12) Show me how you would check the horn is working.
(answer) Check by using the horn.
(13) Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
(answer) Demonstrate by applying the handbrake, when it's applied it secures itself and it's not at the end of the working travel.
(14) Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
(answer) The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or the top of the ears, and is as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
(15) Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
(answer) Operate the controll to wash and wipe the windscreen.
(16) Show me how you would set the demister controlls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.
(answer) Set all relevant controlls including - fan, temperature, air direction and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows.
(17) Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
(answer) Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if neccesary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.
(18) Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
(answer) Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.
(19) Show me how to switch you headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
(answer) Operate switch (turn ignition on if neccesary), check with main beam warning light.
